RESPONSIBILITY

Please read the descriptions and expectations to determine if you have the time to commit and are a good fit to serve as a leader and mentor.

The main purpose of 4-H camp is to provide a fun, safe, educational and inspirational experience for 4-H kids. Camp counselors are trained and empowered to plan and lead an excellent and memorable summer camp experience for those kids.

Expectations:
  • Camp counselors must commit to attending all planning and training meetings. This year, there will be  7 to 10 meetings. There is a lot to plan, so attendence is mandatory, and counselors may also need to meet in smaller groups outside of our regular meetings.
  • Planning camp is an excellent opportunity to strengthen your leadership skills and build a solid team to lead camp. Everyone brings different strengths and talents to the table, so during these meetings we will help you identify where you shine, so you can take the lead on certain aspects of camp activities.
  • There will be a mandatory weekend team building retreat. Camp counselors will spend a weekend together January 19-21, 2024. At this retreat, we’ll form our friendships and bonds, develop your leadership skills, and do some camp planning.
  • The camp counselor team may be adjusted based on participation, effort, and the number of counselors needed as determined by how many campers register to attend. These planning meetings are your opportunity to put your best foot forward, demonstrate your capabilities, share your ideas, and show us your leadership style. If more camp counselors apply than are needed, the adult leaders will select the final camp counselor team based on your performance and energy during the training meetings.
  • Priority is given to 4-H teens ages 14 to 19. If you are 13, you may still apply and serve as a junior camp counselor. Ultimately, 13-year-olds will be selected to join the team based on their demonstrated maturity and effort. If you are 13, and not selected to serve as a junior camp counselor, you may still attend summer camp so that you can have fun, and watch the counselors in action so that you can apply for the next year.
  • During camp, you will always prioritize the needs of the campers over your own. You are expected to lead as a responsible engaged camp counselor. As a counselor, you have the power to inspire a kid, and demonstrate the path forward for them as they begin their journey toward leadership. You are expected to be “on,” active, and engaged with your campers at all times during camp.
If you feel that you meet the qualifications to be an effective camp counselor, and are willing to commit to the expectations listed above, then please scroll down to get your camp counselor application.
